The Western and Arabic book in a dialogue with each other, create two conceptual frameworks that invite the reader to explore the book format and its tradition. In Arabic manuscripts and book printing, tightly woven text blocks were surrounded by ornamental frames as well as spacious margins on all sides of the page where it was common for authors, readers and copyists to leave their comments. This practice creates a collaborative interaction between author and reader. In contrast, the Western tradition is defined by a duality between a text block, structured by lines of text, paragraphs, and an inwardly open white space, helping with reading comprehension and providing a place for readers to comfortably hold the book and rest their eyes.
